Peoria - The Town

The town of Peoria is an interesting town it is a very small town compared to Houston where I moved from. It only has about 120,000 people. The downtown is pretty ghetto but they are building nice, new homes and retail on the north side of town. It is pretty easy to get around here due to pretty minimal traffic so I would suggest living on the north side near Dunlap and the Shops of Grand Prairie. In reality there are only a few streets that get you around town, War Memorial, Knoxville, the 74 and a few others.

We only have one car and did not have time to shop around for a home so we ended up on the south side right in the middle of downtown. It is a far cry from what I would call an ideal neighborhood. The home we live is a very nice 2 bed 2.5 bath home with a large yard directly behind the OSF Hospital and less than 400m from the MCON Nursing school. Peoria had 22 homicides during the year of 2010, this made it the most violent year in over 30 years. I pulled out a map of the town and found that of the 22 homicides 90% were on the south side of War Memorial and 3 or 4 were closer to our neighborhood than I would have liked. Needless to say we keep our doors locked etc. . . I am sure that we will be safe. It is nice to be so close to the freeway and the school though.

Peoria has three large hospitals; Methodist, OSF and Proctor. OSF has over 600 beds and Methodist is over 400 the Proctor hospital is much smaller. OSF is one of the main health care systems in the area, their large hospital also has a nursing school attached to it. I am not sure if there is any sort of competition between MCON and OSF or not.
